PC party leader attends the protest in support of fishermen | SaltWire #newsupdate #newfoundland

Tony Wakeham, said he and his caucus will not attend the budget reading today out of respect for the fishermen in the province.

Fish harvesters in St. John’s, Newfoundland, are protesting due to their dissatisfaction with the current regulations in the fishing industry. They are demanding changes to the system, such as allowing them to sell their catch to buyers outside the province and increasing plant capacity. The harvesters claim that the existing rules give processing plants too much power over them, leading to unfair deductions and restrictions on which species they can sell.

The situation escalated on March 20 when the provincial budget was postponed due to the demonstrations. The government sought an injunction to prevent further disruptions, and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary had to disperse the crowd using horses. Despite the injunction, the protests continued, with the fish harvesters vowing to continue until their demands are met.
