Humanitarian pause in Israel-Hamas war could take place in coming days: Expert

A humanitarian pause could take place as soon as in the coming days, if Israel’s ground operation into Gaza continues, says Ms Jessica Genauer, senior lecturer in international relations at Flinders University. Due to the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, Israel’s allies, such as the United States, United Kingdom and France, are going to increasingly pressure Israel to at least provide for these pauses so that citizens and foreigners can leave the territory, and allow humanitarian aid to enter, she says. The deepening of operations in the heart of Gaza City is part of Israel’s stated military objective to ensure that Hamas can no longer operate as a military or political entity within Gaza, says Ms Genauer. However, it is very challenging with very high costs on both sides, she tells CNA’s Asia First.
