“Chile lives two days of national mourning after some of the most devastating fires in decades. The fires have hit the Valparaiso region, specifically, the resort of Viña del Mar and three other highly densely populated areas leaving a death toll of well over one hundred people, a figure that is expected to rise according to authorities. President Gabriel Boric was visiting the area and said that this is one of the worst tragedies the country has faced since the earthquake of 2010. On Monday, the neighbors started to clean the wreckage and begin the re-building process of their houses while solidarity arises from all over Chile with people sending products such as water, food, hygiene items, and food for pets, as animals have also suffered tremendously from these fires.”

STORYLINE:
Volunteers in central Chile tried to remove charred metal, broken glass and other debris Monday from neighborhoods devastated by wildfires over the past several days, as officials raised the death toll to 122.

Hundreds of people remain missing.

The fires appeared to have diminished by Monday morning after burning intensely since Friday on the eastern edge of the city of Viña del Mar.

Two other towns in the Valparaiso region, Quilpe and Villa Alemana, also have been hit hard, and President Gabriel Boric said Sunday that at least 3,000 homes had been burnt down in the area.

From Chile’s capital, Associated Press reporter Patricia Luna explains how the devastation has affected locals.

“On Monday, the neighbors started to clean the wreckage and begin the re-building process of their houses while solidarity arises from all over Chile with people sending products such as water, food, hygiene items, and food for pets, as animals have also suffered tremendously from these fires.”
